Cael Sanderson isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Penn State wrestling head coach reportedly signed a contract extension, although financial information was not provided. But with Sanderson locked down long-term again, the Nittany Lions could continue their dominance for the foreseeable future. With that in mind, what are the best teams under Sanderson?
Some are fairly new and some are a bit old. But it was a tough exercise to narrow it down to just five teams under the legendary head coach and former Olympic gold medalist. Sanderson joined the program in 2009-10 and won his first national title as a coach in 2011. Since then, Penn State has won nine of the last 11 national titles.
Penn State has won 32 individual national titles under Sanderson, all since 2011. Sanderson also developed the Nittany Lions Wrestling Club, which allows top wrestlers to reside and train for national and international competition. Four members of the club have won medals at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, including a freestyle gold for former Lion David Taylor at 86kg.
