The Cleveland Browns plan to release three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Friday as first reported by Pro Football Talk. The two sides negotiated to turn his remaining $ 8 million salary into a base salary, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, which would make it easier for another team to claim it. The idea, presumably, is to encourage a lower team in the waiver order to claim it and clear the money owed by Cleveland.

Beckham had been exempted from training this week after Cleveland refused to trade him before Tuesday’s deadline. Yahoo! Sports Charles Robinson claimed the team had not received any commercial offers for the disgruntled receiver. The Saints, however, have shown interest.
Beckham racked up 17 receptions for 232 yards in six games. He missed the first two games until he fully recovered from a torn ACL that caused him to miss 11 games, including the playoffs, in 2021.
Earlier this week, Beckham’s dad posted a montage of moments on social media where his son was open but quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t pitch to him. On media availability on Wednesday, Mayfield said he was not offended by the comments, but was surprised. When asked if he thought Beckham’s father was speaking for his son, Mayfield paused before giving the following response:
“I can’t exactly speculate on whose behalf he was speaking. I think a lot of it comes from his father’s point of view. I think you obviously know he naturally wants his son to be successful. I can’t. Blame him. That. I want Odell to succeed. That’s where we were at or at least that’s what I thought. That’s all I really got about that one. “
Mayfield added that as of Wednesday afternoon he had not spoken to the wide receiver since the video was posted. He spoke to Beckham’s best friend and teammate Jarvis Landry.
“He’s extremely close to Odell. Like I said earlier, we all want to see O succeed. There’s no question about it. We’ll take it one day at a time. We haven’t gone into too much detail. because I don’t want to draw that line between them at all. That’s not what I’m trying to do. Jarvis wants to win just as much as I do. These are the types of guys and the types of focus that we need to have right now.”
In media availability on Oct. 7, Beckham shared what communication looks like with his former quarterback after a game.
“Movie. We watch the movie. We talk about it. I spoke to him after the game. I spoke to him on Monday after the meetings. I played (Call of) Duty with him on Tuesday,” he laughed. “We talk all the time, you know. Anyone who’s tall and expects greatness of themselves is going to be upset when they miss an opportunity. He wants to be tall. I want to be tall. Yes, we want perfection. the best, but it happens. “
The overwhelming frustrations are obviously in line with the disappointing start to the season for the team. The Browns are 4-4 after losing to the Steelers. The blame certainly falls on Mayfield for missing a few shots and not seeing Beckham at times. However, the wide receiver also deserves some blame. He had a few drops at critical times.
Before the swap deadline, Beckham’s portrayal requested a swap and then later requested his release, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
In March 2019, Cleveland acquired Beckham and defensive end Olivier Vernon from the Giants in exchange for defenseman Jabrill Peppers, offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, a first-round pick and a third-round pick. Beckham had ruffled a few feathers in the Big Apple with a few comments directed at quarterback Eli Manning.
The LSU product is now subject to exemptions where 31 other teams will have the opportunity to claim it. If unclaimed, then it would become unrestricted free agency. Cleveland owes him $ 7 million for the remainder of the season. Beckham, 29, was set to earn $ 15 million each of the next two seasons. However, there was no guaranteed money left on his contract and the team is saving all that money for the salary cap.
